Well, I was actually not spending money on my helis for a while. I guess that’s over now. Maybe my bird just *knew* it was payday…
Had to happen sooner or later. After three good flights, my poor Shuttle has encountered the ground. I was doing some figure-8s and, at the 2/3 nose in position, I lost my brain-thumb interface. That, coupled with lack of positive pitch, led to a rapid descent followed by a sudden stop.
A few months ago, I grabbed a TREX 450S Carbon. It’s a “v1.5 TREX” with upgraded components.

A few days ago, I found myself looking for some bling for my TREX 450. I sent a few messages back and forth with Scott from RC-Tek, and he convinced me to pick up a full kit from him. He informed me that it represented some of his older stock, but assured me that the heli was fully upgradeable to the latest model. The price was great and, seeing as how Scott responded quickly to all my questions (usually within 10 minutes or so), I just couldn’t pass it up.
I made the purchase via PayPal and, within an hour, had a shipping confirmation from Scott.
One problem with helis is telling where they are and which way they are pointing. To that end, I hooked up my newest canopy with the following paint job. Continue reading »
One of the hardest things to do on a heli is to learn to hover. Helis are, by nature, unstable. Some have described it as balancing a marble on a large mirror. Or standing on a basketball. I think the point you should be taking away from this is that it’s FRICKIN HARD to hover a helicopter.
It’s been a while. I’ve been so involved in my new heli, that I forgot to update my blog.
I’m still not a very good pilot. Nice heli bodies are made of thin styrene and take several days to build and paint. They usually cost around $50 or more. I figured I can do the same thing with $10 in material and a week’s worth of evenings.
So, I’m kinda frustrated with my heli. Not the heli itself, but getting everything to fit. The frame of my heli was designed to work with a specific set of components. I have “upgraded” those components.
I got my FP heli flying (mostly) with full separates. She’s a bit tail heavy and twitches around a bit more than I’d like, but I can live with it.
